Sprint Option: Week 2

Week 2 is in the bag. Most teams are breathing sighs of relief after relatively lackluster performances across the board. No surprise seeing as I picked so many favorites to cover. We had a lot of football this weekend, so let’s get to the option!

Miami went to the mat with a team from Boca…

I took Miami to cover which they did, but I lucked out. The Canes looked positively awful against the Owls. Miami couldn’t really get anything going until midway through the first quarter. The late backdoor cover was nice, but the Canes have tons of issues. A scare against FAU right before conference play leads me to believe that Golden is on borrowed time. Miami’s coaching is shoddy, especially the Offensive Line–ordinarily a hallmark of Miami’s team.

FSU players should be buying Cook’s meals for the rest of the season…

Noles fans should be worried. They were played very tough by a Bulls team that had no business playing on the same day of the week as Florida State. Yet, they hung around and it took late separation for Nole fans to stop biting their nails. This game was tied…at 7…at halftime! Even though the ACC isn’t a stellar conference, FSU has to play Clemson and GT this season and the team that showed up Saturday won’t beat either.

Houston beat Louisville and was my most embarrassing pick of the weekend…

I had Louisville to cover, big, because I saw them play Auburn pretty tough–more on that in a moment. Turns out they both just suck. The Angry Birds looked awful and couldn’t cobble together any semblance of coherence on offense. Houston isn’t a bad team, but they should have been overmatched. They weren’t, and managed to pull out a win. If I’m a UL fan, the most I’m hoping for is to spoil UK this year. But, that’s a lofty goal.

Auburn is so, so, so bad…

They had five losses last year. I don’t know why I’m surprised, but I am. The voters nuked AU in the polls after narrowly escaping Jacksonville State, an FCS team. They should have. If not for the stupid preseason poll, Auburn would not be ranked. They shouldn’t be ranked. They trailed at halftime and took overtime to beat JSU. And, had JSU not capitulated to OT by taking a knee to end regulation, Auburn may have lost. Failed coaching lost JSU the chance to win, not any of the play by Auburn. Muschamp’s defense allowed 434 yards of offense. He now has two SEC schools paying him millions for his services. Let that sink in. Auburn heads into conference play next week and that’s not good news in the SEC west.

Vegas doesn’t take Clemson seriously, and that’s a mistake…

Clemson demolished App State this weekend, not a shock. They covered the spread, not a shock. The spread was 19.5, that is a shock. App State is was an FCS school and Clemson is flirting with the top 10–might be time to reconsider making the jump. That is a ridiculous line. Clemson crushed them, they’re for real–at least until Dabo finds a way to Georgia a winnable game.

The Ramblin’ Wreck rumbles on…

Tulane, by all measures, is a far superior opponent to Alcorn State. However, the result was nearly identical. Tech executed with precision and ease against a team that was clearly overmatched. The backups were in by the 3rd quarter. Tech looks great and still has room to improve. “Conference” play begins next week for the Jackets as they get their first real test in South Bend. Should be a good game, but it took late heroics the Irish to beat UVA. Still, ND is good enough to give Tech fits.

Without Zaire, the Irish are in uncharted territory…

Despite that lead in sounding like a very strange geopolitical headline, it accurately describes what is happening in South Bend. The Irish escaped Virginia but lost star quarterback Malik Zaire for the season. Probably not a trade the Irish wanted to make. Now, they will face a Paul Johnson option attack with only a week to prepare. The prospects are grim.

Florida struggles to take down ECU, Tropical Storm McElwain sustained gale force winds…

Florida looked awful. They managed to eek out a win based on talent disparity alone. The team Florida put out there on Saturday will lose to anyone in conference.

McElwain eviscerated Kelvin Taylor in front of the whole offense after Taylor performed the throat slash gesture post touchdown. He then barely kept himself from exploding in the post-game press conference. As you read this, the Gators are likely still running gassers from this morning’s session.

TCU crushes a team they were supposed to crush, and that’s actually important…

For starters, I can’t rule out the notion that in beating Stephen F. Austin 70 to 7, TCU may actually have only played an individual named Steve Austin–not Stone Cold, he would have scored more than 7. In a weekend where favorites played like crap, it’s nice to see some teams win games they’re supposed to.

Ohio State fails to cover, still wins by 38…

Yeah, I took the points. Couldn’t turn down a 6 TD spot. Crushing a bad Hawaii team was required and expected. Someone should really speak publicly about OSU’s weak schedule…

Bielema whines about OSU’s schedule being too easy, loses to Toledo at home…

Woo pig. Comeuppance is a beautiful thing. Don’t get me wrong, Biels has a point. But, since when is it a team’s fault that their conference sucks? Schedules are made years in advance–OSU’s is from Urban’s “sad pizza” period. If OSU continues to have nobodies, then maybe it will be time for the mockery. Also, backing Biels because the Razorbacks play in the SEC is not a thing. You have to play a tougher schedule than OSU AND WIN in order to be able to say something. Losing to Toledo does not meet those criteria. This is hilarious. And it will be funny for a long, long time.

Georgia dominated Vandy…

Nothing to see here.

Oklahoma took Tennessee’s lunch money…

An average Oklahoma team beat an OK Tennessee team in Neyland. And here we are talking about it like it was a top ten matchup. Tennessee is not back until they start winning games like this again, and Oklahoma proved they were marginally better than a team ranked behind them. Meh, Tennessee may break the streak against the Gators this year, but let’s not get carried away by the hype.

Arkansas State led Mizzou at halftime…

Man, what a sluggish weekend. This is not the way favorites wanted to conclude their cupcake games.

Southern Cal blows the doors off Idaho and people are putting them in the CFB Playoff…

Let’s everyone just calm down. The PAC12 looks like it may have a photo finish this year, but let’s not forget about Oregon or UCLA.

LSU held off Miss St by scoring no points in the fourth quarter…

This game was weird and very much a Les Miles special. Neither team looked impressive, but LSU came off a canceled tune up game to take on a divisional opponent. Wins on the road in the SEC West are rare for anyone. You take them where you can get them.

Oregon/MSU may be the best game we see all year…

I don’t actually believe that, but it had the feel of a playoff game. And, it basically had the implications of an elimination game. Oregon now has a tough battle to get back in the Playoff with one loss. Sparty on the other hand is in the driver’s seat. This was also a must win for Connor Cook if he wants to go to NYC in December and hoist the trophy. This game was too special to be a week 2 game. If you got to see it, savor it.
